Red light cameras were installed at busy New Jersey intersections with the intention of reducing traffic accidents and careless driving. However, a new study shows that accidents have actually become more frequent at these intersections. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the number of accidents at intersections with red light cameras has increased slightly and the number of rear-end collisions has risen significantly.
Officials say that there were 577 collisions at the 83 intersections with cameras before they were installed and 582 collisions after they were installed. Additionally, rear-end collisions have increased by 20 percent at these busy intersections. According to a report in The Newspaper, rear-end collisions may have increased because drivers who see the cameras are more likely to slam on their brakes to avoid a ticket. Read the rest »
