Dozens Injured in New Jersey to New York Ferry Crash at Pier

By Lependorf & Silverstein on January 16, 2013

About 70 people were injured in New York when a ferry carrying 326 passengers crashed into a Lower Manhattan pier. According to a news report in The Star Ledger, the 36-year-old captain of the ferry says a mechanical malfunction caused the diesel engines to shut off. Officials say the Seastreak Wall Street ferry crashed near Wall Street in Manhattan after traveling from Atlantic Highlands in New Jersey. The passengers were thrown about when it crashed into a Lower Manhattan pier at approximately 13 mph. Of the estimated 70 injured victims from New Jersey, 11 sustained serious injuries. It is unclear at this time what caused the ferry to crash or if the recently refitted engines and modified propulsion system were to blame for the incident.

Because of the size of ferries and the number of passengers they carry, ferry accidents can be extremely dangerous. Many victims of this particular crash were bloodied, bandaged, and carried off the ferry on stretchers. When this type of tragic accident occurs, there are many questions that must be answered. What caused the ferry to crash? Was alcohol or drugs a factor? Did the collision result from a mechanical malfunction or due to operator error? When was the ferry last serviced? Did the transportation company fail to properly maintain and repair the ferry?

Whatever the cause of the crash, injured victims would be well advised to discuss their legal options with an experienced personal injury attorney. These types of cases can become extremely complicated because of the number of victims involved. A reputed New Jersey personal injury attorney will know how to determine liability for the crash and how to hold the at-fault party financially accountable for the victim’s medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
