Man Killed in New Jersey Motorcycle Crash
A 21-year-old man was killed in a New Jersey motorcycle accident when he collided with a flatbed truck. According to an NJ.com news report, the fatal crash occurred on Route 80 near milepost 42 in Roxbury. Officials say his motorcycle hit the back of a stopped flatbed truck. Investigators believe his head struck the truck’s underride crash bar, knocking his helmet off. He died at the scene. It is unclear why the truck was stopped in traffic or how much time the rider had to avoid the collision.
A rear underride accident is when a vehicle goes partially underneath the back of a tractor-trailer. According to a recent ABC News report, over 350 people are killed each year in these types of accidents. There are safety standards designed to prevent vehicles from going underneath trailers, but rear impact guards do not always work. One study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that a small passenger car traveling at 35 miles an hour can easily break a rear guard allowing the car and the occupants to get crushed under the trailer.
Whenever a rear-end underride accident occurs, it must be determined what caused the crash and how it could have been prevented. Investigators must review if the driver of the smaller vehicle was speeding or if the truck driver was behaving erratically. It can prove difficult to avoid a rear-end collision if the vehicle in front of you brakes suddenly, makes a dangerous lane change or does not have properly working reflectors or lights.
