Shamong Township, NJ (April 29th, 2022) – On the evening of September 28th, 2022, a person driving an SUV became trapped in the vehicle for nearly an hour after an accident involving a large tractor-trailer in Burlington County, New Jersey.

The accident happened shortly before 9 p.m. on Thursday. Investigators say that the accident happened on Route 206, close to Atsion Rd. in Shamong Township.

Upon collision, the force of the impact caused both vehicles to careen off the road and into a nearby woods. The person driving the SUV was freed from the vehicle by first responders. The SUV driver was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities have not released the medical conditions of the drivers involved. Their identities have also not been released.

Run-off-road accidents occur when a motor vehicle is purposefully maneuvered off the road, drifts off the road, or is forced off the road. These accidents are sometimes single vehicle accidents that happen when for one reason or another, the vehicle careens off the road. Run-off-road accidents, however, can also happen as a result of another vehicle on the road.

In many cases, these types of accidents can happen when another vehicle unsafely enters a driver’s lane and although no contact happens, the victim may be forced off the road in order to evade an accident from happening. Unfortunately, these types of car accidents are common and they can happen as a result of a number of different factors.

According to a report published online by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, run-off-road accidents contribute to a high proportion of deaths and catastrophic injuries to vehicle occupants. The online report titled Run-Off-Road Crashes: An On-Scene Perspective indicates that results show that more than 95 percent of the critical factors that contribute to a crash are driver-related.

The report states that the reasons that contribute to run-off-road accidents include non-performance errors, such as falling asleep while driving, suffering a medical condition, or other physical impairment. It also includes recognition errors, such as being distracted while driving. Other reasons include driver performance errors, such as poor directional control and driver decision errors, such as driving too fast for weather or roadway conditions.

Being run off the roadway can be a traumatic experience, but when the incident involved a large commercial truck, this makes the whole situation far more distressing. Run-off-road accidents happen frequently as a result of large semi-trucks because these vehicles have significantly larger blind spots. When a truck driver fails to see another driver on a lane before making a lane change, the driver of the smaller vehicle may swerve out of the road in order to prevent a collision from happening. In an attempt to avoid being hit by the semi-truck, however, the driver of the smaller vehicle can end up in a serious, single-vehicle accident. Regardless of the type of vehicle involved, run-off-road accidents usually result in long-term repercussions.

Whenever a person suffers a run-off-road accident, the consequences can last a lifetime. Many of these accidents result in serious collisions that can result in a variety of catastrophic injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and crush injuries like broken bones and internal bleeding. As a result of these devastating injuries, victims may be eligible to pursue additional monetary compensation from the party that caused the accident.

The State of New Jersey is a no-fault state, meaning, Personal Injury Protection benefits can be collected by victims from their own insurance coverage for the reasonable value of their medical expenses resulting from the accident. Victims may also be eligible to recover a percentage of their lost wages through the benefits provided by the Personal Injury Protection program.

Unfortunately, Personal Injury Protection benefits rarely provide sufficient coverage when the victim has suffered catastrophic injuries in an accident. For this reason, those who have been seriously wounded in an accident are suggested to seek monetary compensation from the party who caused their damages. Depending on the specifics of the case, injured victims may recover additional damages that can range from past and future medical care costs, the loss of earning potential, property damage, emotional trauma, pain and suffering, and the loss of quality of life.

When the victim perishes as a result of the accident, his or her immediate family members may be eligible for compensation through a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the at-fault party. Depending on each individual case, the plaintiffs can recover monetary damages for the costs of the deceased’s funeral, medical costs incurred by the victim prior to his or her death, the loss of monetary support from the victim, and other tangible losses.
