Autumn Isn’t Too Early to Prepare Your Car For Safer Winter Driving

By Lependorf & Silverstein on September 4, 2015

Driving in NJ WinterAs September’s mild weather rolls in and the back to school routine begins, you might not be thinking about winter auto maintenance. But early fall is a great time to prepare your vehicle to roll smoothly through seasonal weather changes. The weather is milder, allowing you to work outdoors on your own vehicle, and maintenance garages’ schedules aren’t crowded with drivers clamoring for last-minute work before New Jersey’s winter storms hit. Prepare your vehicle for any weather by keeping this checklist in mind:

  • Oil changes and lube Make sure your oil is right for your vehicle’s engine and is designed to stand up to winter driving.
  • Test your battery Don’t get stranded! Many garages will test your batter for free and help you choose the correct replacement if needed.
  • Check and replace windshield wiper blades Your wipers are essential to visibility in winter driving. Make sure your washer fluid level is topped up as well.
  • Double-check your coolant and antifreeze levels Do a flush and fill if needed.
  • Examine your tires You may need to add air to your vehicle’s tires as the weather gets colder. If you need new tires, make an appointment to replace them now. You’ll be glad you did once the first snow falls!
  • Assemble your winter car safety kit Jumper cables, flares, ice scrapers, road salt, flashlights, a spare set of warm clothing, first aid equipment, and non-perishable snacks are all good choices.
