Ambassador for Chicago Biking Struck and Killed by Car

By Lependorf & Silverstein on June 11, 2013

A remembrance sign has been placed where Robert Cann was struck and killed by a vehicle on May 29. According to The Chicago Tribune, Cann, a transplant from New Hampshire, was the ambassador for biking in Chicago. Cann’s residence was the 3200 block of North Southport Avenue. He was struck by a Mercedes traveling south on Chicago’s Clybourn Avenue in the 1300 block and was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where at 7:05 p.m. he was pronounced dead.

A loss like this in the bicycle community can be felt across the country, and as attorneys dedicated to protecting bicyclists, the legal team at Lependorf & Silverstein knows the impact of this death.

In a statement provided by Groupon, the company Cann worked for, Cann was referred to as a talented and popular member of the editorial team. He was always willing to help others in his work life and social life. His passion was bicycle riding, and he always had the time to answer questions from those who were new to the sport in the big city. In the effort to enable others to become familiar with city streets and safe lanes in which to ride, he would even take them on test rides. He wanted to encourage others to discover the freedom and enjoyment of riding bicycles.

Cann was excited to be able to introduce novices into the sport of cycling, and his primary interest was to keep them safe. He had formerly worked at an outdoor equipment business on North Halsted Street. Anyone who displayed an interest in biking in the city received his attention. He would go out of his way to help him or her. His friends plan to make the monthly Critical Mass bike ride in memory of Cann.
