West Windsor was originally established as New Windsor in 1682 after a treaty was formed between William Penn and the Lenni Lenape tribe whose confirmation of existence can be found in the form of tools and weaponry that is still found along the Assunpink waterway. The township of West Windsor is home to the village of Grover's Mill, which at one time was a favorite destination of presidents Woodrow Wilson and Grover Cleveland. This area was made particularly famous in 1938 as the purported location of contact by alien spacecraft in the radio drama War of the Worlds adapted by Orson Welles. This radio play was a Halloween hoax which sent the entire country into hysteria and catapulted Orson Welles' career.
