Trenton was first settled in 1679 by Quakers looking for the opportunity to exercise religious freedom free from the persecution of England. The town was named Trent-towne after a local landholder and was the site of the first military victory by George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Following the war, Trenton was made the nation's capital for the last two months of 1784 and the state capital in 1790. Trenton was home to the first professional basketball game in 1896 between the Trenton Basketball Team and the Brooklyn YMCA. The town slogan "Trenton Makes, The World Takes" was established in the early 1920's to reflect the major role in manufacturing and can be seen displayed on the Lower Free Bridge today.
