South Brunswick was first established in 1798 as a township of rural farms and small settlements. The location of the township on important transportation routes caused the area to grow combined with the opening of the New Jersey Turnpike in 1951 the town has grown quickly in a cyclical manner; starting with residential growth, commercial growth, industrial growth and finally transportation route growth. Though the area has grown especially quickly in the last hundred years, much of the township's land remains untouched.
