Resources
The area was to become Plainsboro was originally home to the Unami Native Americans and later settled by the Dutch as an agricultural community. The origin of the township name is still disputed as there is documentation regarding the name "Planesborough" after the Plane Tavern, "The Plains", "Borough of the Plains", though the original spelling was "Plainsborough" with the name shortened by Presidential decree in 1894. In the late 19th century, several farms and dairy farms moved to the area including the Walker Gordon Dairy Farm, who created the marketing icon of Elsie the Cow. On May 6, 1919 Plainsboro was officially founded in order to build its own elementary school (Wicoff School) and this date is still celebrated with an annual festival.
