North Brunswick was one of the original townships incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature in 1798 though the area was settled over a hundred years earlier. The earliest records of settlement date back to 1683 naming ten families including Nicholas Bodine, the blacksmith, and namesake for "Berdine's Corner". For over two hundred years, North Brunswick experienced much industrial growth from the creation of several mills running along Lawrence Brook, namely grist, snuff, finished timber and fulling (fabric). Over the years the introduction of major roads and highways improved accessibility to new residents and contributing to the population increasing by ten times over the population of just 70 years ago.
