Montgomery was first settled by the Lenni Lenape Native American for nearly two thousand years. In the early 1700's the area became a rural farming community settled by English, German and Dutch families. The township was named after the American Revolutionary War General Brigadier Richard Montgomery. In the last century, Montgomery Township has grown into a primarily suburban residential community, with industrial and business zones as well as large areas of preserved open land.
