Monmouth County was first settled by English, Dutch and Scottish farmers in the mid 17th century. The Battle of Monmouth took place in 1778 and involved over 30,000 British and Continental Army soldiers headed by General George Washington. This battle was a watershed for the American Revolutionary War as the actions of the Continental Army caused the British troops to retreat. In the 1800's the area drew many visitors to the region, for vacation due to the large, pristine seashore. Today Monmouth County is a popular vacation destination, offering historical sites, racetracks, antique shops and twenty seven miles of ocean beaches.
