Mercer County was founded in 1838, being created from other outlying counties. The County was named in honor of General Hugh Mercer, a distinguished hero of the Revolution, who died from wounds received during the Battle of Princeton in 1777. Mercer County was an integral location where General Washington forged two assaults on the Hessian and British armies. This area was also made particularly famous in 1938 as the county which contained the purported location of contact by alien spacecraft in the radio drama War of the Worlds adapted by Orson Welles. This radio play was a Halloween hoax which sent the entire country into hysteria and catapulted Orson Welles' career.
Mercer County is home to Princeton University, Rider University, The College of New Jersey, Thomas Edison State College and Mercer County Community College. The County is looking to the future in education, community and economics and has recently been ranked 21st on the list for businesses to locate by Forbes Magazine.
