Lawrence Township was founded by Quakers in 1697, and named Maidenhead, after a village near London. The Township became part of Hunterdon County in 1714. In 1816 the Township was renamed Lawrence after Captain James Lawrence, commander of the USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812, best known for his dying command of "Don't Give up the Ship." The headquarters of Bristol-Meyers Squibb's Pharmaceutical Research Institute is located in the area. The Township has also been home to Norman Schwarzkopf and Jon Stewart. Lawrence Township today has been able to retain a small town atmosphere while balancing corporate growth, beauty and safety within the community.
