Resources
Hamilton Township was first incorporated in 1813 and covering 115 square miles, is the largest municipality in New Jersey. The eastern quarter of the area was originally named Mays Landing after George May who, in 1756, built a shipyard and trading post. The shipbuilding industry flourished with shipbuilding yards producing over two hundred vessels through 1880. Material for shipbuilding was made exclusively of lumber from local forests and iron from the Weymouth foundries. Wooden shipbuilding halted at the end of the century and was replaced with ships built of iron. Though the shipbuilding industry originally ceased due to lack of suitable timber, the western three quarters of the township consists of pine forests protected from a similar fate by local preservation commissions. Today, Hamilton Township is a modern community with a growing suburban area with a respect of the history made apparent with the successful preservation of the original rural community including the historic Mays Landing Village. Today the Township of Hamilton carries a vision to continue to celebrate diversity and create an environment that provides opportunities for all people.
