One of the oldest towns in New Jersey, Cranbury was part of land gifted by King Charles to his brother James in 1680. Originally named "Cranberry" the name was changed in the mid 1800's at the suggestion of Reverend Joseph Symmes who believed the name had, until then been spelled incorrectly. Because the town was located directly between Philadelphia and New York City, Cranbury grew quickly to accommodate travelers with many taverns and inns. The town became an integral headquarters and throughway for General Washington and his army during the Battle of Monmouth. Designated as a State and National Historic District, Cranbury still respects its roots with the surrounding land and in that effort has preserved 75% of local available farmland. While respecting the importance of the agricultural community the township is home to 3227 residents (2000 Census) and growing as well in the industrial and commercial industries with many new office buildings, retail stores and warehouses.
