Life Altering Injuries That Are Common in Serious Accidents

When a client has been catastrophically injured, they generally fall into one or more of the following categories:

Spinal cord injury: These types of injuries can be the result of anything from a physician's malpractice to a truck driver's error in judgment on the highway. For example, fractured vertebrae sustained while working on a dangerous job site can cut into the spinal cord resulting in permanent damage. In some cases, the victim will experience numbness or a complete loss of feeling or sensation below the site of the damage.

Quadriplegia: occurs when a victim loses physical ability in their arms and legs, whereas paraplegia occurs when a victim maintains use of their arms but loses physical ability in their legs. While some suffer from incomplete paralysis, others sustain permanent and complete damage.

Traumatic brain injury: Whether someone's head strikes the pavement in a slip and fall accident or is hit by a distracted driver while using a cross walk, severe head injuries are often associated with serious accidents. These injuries can result in life-changing memory issues, struggles with communication, wild mood swings, and loss of physical and mental abilities.

Amputation: Some industrial accidents result in such severe damage to a body part that the only medical recourse is amputation. An amputation can be complete where the appendage is totally severed or it may be partial where some soft tissue remains at the site of the trauma. When a severed limb or finger is not preserved and reattached right away, amputation may be the only option.

Burn injury: A burn injury is considered catastrophic when the damage is permanent and affects a significant portion of the body. Not only will victims of burn injuries suffer through expensive and painful medical procedures but they also may lose feeling and physical ability in the damaged part of their body. The emotional trauma suffered by burn victims as a result of disfigurement is also significant.

Eye injury: A eye injury can result in impaired vision, loss of sight in one eye or complete blindness. These are not minor debilitations but lifelong ones that can adversely affect one's ability to carry out daily tasks. Treatment and rehabilitation can be both extensive and expensive and require services from a variety of medical experts, including ophthalmologists.

Bone fracture: Generally, bone fractures result from high force impact or stress. Treatment often involves CT and MRI scans, surgery, the use of splints and casts and rehabilitation. Since the healing process can take several months, victims may have to depend on disability benefits for a significant period of time while they are unable to work.
