Man Seriously Injured in Elevator-Shaft Fall

A Bergen County man, who was injured in a construction site accident, accepted a settlement in the amount of $695,000. Alfonso T., 57, suffered significant injuries when he fell 30 feet down an elevator shaft while working on a building in Jersey City, New Jersey, as a union carpenter. The severity of the injuries to his lumbar spine, thoracic spine, right ankle, and right clavicle will prevent Alfonso from returning to work. A Bergen County judge ruled that Alfonso is totally and permanently disabled. A workers’ compensation claim was filed against the employer, and a third-party claim was filed against the general contractor of the construction project. As part of the settlement, the workers’ compensation insurance company must provide Alfonso with medical care for the rest of his life.
