The largest of the New Jersey counties, Burlington was founded in 1677 and was at one time the capital of West Jersey. The county is home to one of the greatest agricultural counties in the United States and is well-known as home of the largest blueberries in the world as well as being one of the largest cranberry producing counties in the country. The county has been called the &Cradle of Emancipation", for the great contribution of its citizens towards the freedom of African American slaves. The county houses a network of Underground Railroad sites, which have all been preserved for posterity. Previous residents of the area include Oliver Cromwell, Alice Stokes Paul and Elizabeth Coleman White.
