Auto accident whiplash injuries are common outcomes of not only rear-end collisions, but also other types of auto accidents. While most victims will eventually be able to resume working and carrying out normal daily activities after suffering a whiplash injury, the road to recovery can be a long one. Injured individuals often require medical treatment, physical therapy and occasionally even surgery. An estimated 20 percent of victims will have chronic pain after sustaining a whiplash injury, and 18 percent will not completely recover from a whiplash injury after two years.

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash commonly occurs when another vehicle strikes a motorist from behind. The impact of this collision can cause a person’s neck to move backward and then forward very abruptly. Depending on the speed at which the other driver struck the car, the force can be enough to move the head and neck beyond the normal range of motion. This sudden and excessive movement can damage the soft tissues in the neck, which include the muscles, tendons and ligaments. Other structures that may be injured include the vertebral joints and disks and the nerve roots of the spine.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Because whiplash can cause lasting damage and persistent pain, it is important for drivers to recognize the symptoms of this type of injury so they can seek medical treatment and legal assistance as soon as possible. Neck pain is a common symptom of auto accident whiplash injuries, but there are others, including these:

  • Tinnitus
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder pain
  • Muscle spasms in the neck area
  • Neck swelling
  • Muscle tightness and soreness

Contact a NJ Whiplash Injury Attorney at (609) 240-0040

Many people who feel relatively fine after a car or truck crash do not bother going to the hospital for an exam or contacting an attorney. This often proves to be a serious mistake, as symptoms of whiplash injuries can take some time to manifest. At that point, it may be too late to file a claim. If you sustain an injury in a rear-end collision or other type of accident, even if you are not experiencing any neck pain, it is crucial to see a doctor for a physical exam. If diagnosed with whiplash, your next course of action should be to contact an attorney with experience in these types of cases.

An experienced New Jersey car accident attorney will fight on your behalf to get you all the compensation you deserve and minimize the often devastating financial impact such injuries can have on accident victims. Contact Lependorf & Silverstein, P.C. to schedule a free consultation to discuss your case.
